Air conditioners are measured in tons, which describe how much heat the system can remove from your home in an hour, not how much the unit weighs. Too little capacity and the system can't keep up. Too much, and you run into a different set of problems that surprise most homeowners.

The Problem With an Oversized AC

It seems logical that a bigger unit would cool your home faster. And it does cool quickly, which is exactly the problem. An oversized air conditioner blasts your home to the set temperature in a short burst, then shuts off. This is called short-cycling, and it creates a chain reaction of issues:

• Poor humidity control. Your AC doesn't just cool the air, it removes moisture. That dehumidifying only happens while the system runs. When an oversized unit cuts off after a few minutes, it never runs long enough to pull the humidity out, leaving your home cool but clammy, a real issue in the humid Midlands.
• Uneven temperatures. Short bursts of cooling don't give the air time to circulate evenly, so some rooms feel cold while others stay warm.

It struggles to keep up on the hottest days, wears itself out from running nonstop, and still leaves you uncomfortable. Correct AC sizing avoids both extremes.

Instead, technicians perform a load calculation (often called a Manual J) that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation, windows, layout, and local climate.
